Overcoming biases and suboptimal methods in consciousness science

Resumen: Perhaps the only thing that can be stated with absolute certainty is that we are conscious beings, subjects of a rich world of subjective experiences. However, it is surprising how little we know about the structure, function, and neural basis of consciousness. There are probably many reasons why we should expect progress to be slow and tentative. Here, I will argue that one of the factors hindering progress in this area is an overreliance on poor measures of consciousness, coupled with suboptimal statistical methods and, possibly, reporting biases. Fortunately, there are simple solutions to many of these problems, which will hopefully allow us to base future research on more solid foundations.
