The dynamics of musical interactions: From caregiver-infant bonds to collective audience experiences

Abstract: The majority of research on musical processing, behaviours, and experiences has been conducted in individuals in laboratory settings with impoverished stimuli. Yet across cultures, music is most typically engaged in with other people, and involves rich, multimodal, complex stimuli. It is therefore necessary to conduct studies in real-world contexts with multiple interacting people, but experimental control is challenging under such circumstances, limiting the conclusions that can be drawn. We therefore built the LIVELab research-concert hall to introduce the possibility of experimental control in real world contexts. It is a 106-seat fully equipped concert hall with exquisite virtual sound control and the capacity to measure movement, neural responses (EEG), physiological responses (e.g., heart, breathing, GSR), gaze, and facial expressions in multiple performers and up to 100 audience members simultaneously. In this talk I will outline some of the findings from LIVELab studies from the last decade on how musicians communication non-verbally, how dancers coordinate, and how audiences experience live performances experiences with other audience members.
