Basic Information for International Students

The Official Master’s Degree in Research and Progress in Microbiology of the University of Granada offers an advanced, conceptual and methodological training in Microbiology, with an environmental, nutritional, industrial and clinical/diagnostic orientation. The student must take 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), 36 of them correspond to the teaching module and 24 to the research module, and the student has to present a final report which will be carried out during the tutored research period.

This Degree allows to develop the training of high-level researchers in a variety of lines, always in the field of Microbiology, with a prominent capacity of acquisition of work methods, including the most advanced ones. In order to achieve that, this Degree is taught, organised and coordinated mainly by members of the Department of Microbiology of the University of Granada, members of the Estación Experimental del Zaidín belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), members of the company Lactalis Puleva and of the Hospital Campus de la Salud. All these participants are professors with a high scientific and technical production and with a pronounced career in their research activity.

The Master Degree offers a wide variety of elective courses (teaching module), affecting new aspects such as the study of signal transduction systems; biodiversity, with application of advanced molecular biology techniques; ecology and biotechnology applications, covering relevant issues such as the fixation of nitrogen, mycorrhizas and other interactions with plants; bioremediation and biodegradation of recalcitrant molecules; extremophile microorganisms and their biotechnological applications; production of bacteriocins and its applications; bacterial pathogenesis, with the advances that this field of Microbiology have brought in cellular and molecular Immunology advances, bacterial genetics, structural biology and the study of the interactions with pathogen/host; probiotic microorganisms and nutritional microbiology; and courses on clinical microbiology, including advanced testing of the molecular diagnosis of bacterial and viral infections. Similarly the lines of research to perform the Master’s Thesis (research module) offered are extensive and varied. In general terms, the Master’s offer responds to social demand of graduates trained in microbiological research. The intention has been to present a diversified and entirely optional offer that allows students, with the help of their tutor, to put together their postgraduate studies in microbiology in accordance with their research interests.
