Translation is central to print culture. Investigating the role and location of literary translation and translators, historically and today, sheds light on the dynamics of the travelling of narratives and, more generally, on the interplay between cultural production and plurilingual negotiations. I have posited the notion of the “translator’s archive”, both in its materiality and as a concept, to outline and configure the translator as an agent of cultural production. In this presentation I will discuss the project "Translators' Archives: Voicing Cultural Agency in Print Culture in the Americas" (SSHRC funded for 2022-2027), which focuses on Latin American literary translators and translators of Latin American literature from the twentieth century to the first decades of the twenty-first. In the project I trace translators' statements and texts—from interviews to unpublished materials—seeking to document translation praxis and situate, through a comparative lens, translation and translators with respect to specific spaces of intellectual sociability and narrative circulation. The main goals of investigating translators' documents are to map transnational networks of cultural production, foreground translators’ role and agency, and reveal the workings of narrative transmission and intellectual relations.
