There is a funded Ph.D. studentship opportunity in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT). The prospective student should have a master degree in coastal engineering, physical oceanography, applied mathematics, or a related field and could start the appointment as early as January 2019. Knowledge on some of the topics listed below is desired
- Flood modeling using coastal ocean numerical models such as ADCIRC, ROMS, Delft3D, etc. - Surface wave modeling using phase-averaged (e.g. SWAN) or phase-resolving (e.g. SWASH, FUNWAVE) numerical models. - Hydrological modeling (focused on coastal regions) using rainfall-runoff models. - Statistical analysis, extreme value theory, and probabilistic risk analysis. - Coastal hydrodynamics (wave theories, nonlinear wave-wave interaction, wave-current interaction, Navier-Stokes equations, shallow water equations, etc.).

18/07/2018: Premios Fundación Aquae a Trabajos de Fin de Máster
Se convocan los Premios de Cátedra Aquae de Economía del Agua 2018 con el objetivo de promover y reconocer trabajos de investigación de cualquier disciplina sobre el agua.
Con el objetivo de contribuir a la excelencia de la investigación en temas de economía del agua, se convoca la cuarta IV edición de los Premios Trabajo Fin de Master. Los aspirantes deben ser estudiantes titulados que hayan presentado su TFM, con una calificación mínima de 7 sobre 10 en una universidad nacional o extranjera pública o privada, en los tres años previos a la fecha de la convocatoria de estos premios.
El plazo para la presentación de solicitudes es del 23 de mayo al 28 de septiembre de 2018 (ambos inclusive). Los trabajos ganadores obtendrán, en ambas categorías, un premio de 1000 € y los accésit 500€.

PhD studentship title: Multi-time-scale modelling framework for long-term prediction of coastal environments (Water and Environmental Engineering Group, University of Southampton)
Project Description: The ability to promptly produce accurate long-term predictions of coastal response to varying natural conditions is of paramount importance. This is particularly true within the context of adaptation of coastal communities to sea level rise and other effects of climate change.
This PhD project will aim at the development of a framework where different types of models (varying in their temporal scales and fidelity) can mutually interact and feed each other. This will translate into a general prediction tool capable of delivering accurate and fast, long-term predictions of any coastal environment while minimising input data requirements and/or number of assumptions. This novel and versatile tool will enable coastal managers and engineers to test a large number of proposed adaptation strategies. This will be achieved by means of a careful balance between computational time and model accuracy.

El proyecto, “REGENERACION DE AGUAS MEDIANTE UN NUEVO CONCEPTO DE FILTROS VERDES. CONDICIONANTES HIDROGEOLOGICOS (FILVER+)”, cuya investigadora principal es Irene de Bustamante Gutiérrez, aborda el desarrollo de un filtro verde enmendado (FVE) que actúe como tratamiento secundario y terciario.

Contaminant Release Modeler: RPS is seeking an individual with a strong technical background interested in using modeling software developed by RPS to answer technical questions from regulators and industry associated with quantifying risks from the oil & gas and chemical industries. The successful candidate will have experience in the application of quantitative analyses to solve environmental problems associated with contaminants in terrestrial, aquatic, and/or atmospheric ecosystems. Strong problem solving, organizational, and time management skills are a must. The candidate must have strong technical writing skills and clear verbal communication skills. Experience in modeling is a plus. Programming (Matlab/Python/Fortran), ArcGIS, proficiency of the MS Office Suite, research, and presentation skills are highly desirable. Some familiarity with hydrocarbon chemistry is welcome.
Marine Biologist, Biological Oceanographer, Fisheries Biologist, Ecologist: RPS is seeking a biologist capable of providing research and technical support for analysis of environmental impacts on marine organisms. Ideal candidate will have a BS degree with (3-5 years) experience or MS degree in marine biology, biological oceanography, fisheries biology, ecology or equivalent. Required skills include the collection and preparation of biological model input data, preparation of technical reports, research of marine biological information and literature, analysis of large fisheries databases, expertise in fish and invertebrate population dynamics, and knowledge of ecological statistics. Experience with MS Office Suite, data processing software (e.g., R and MatLab), and data management are highly desirable. This position does not include any field or laboratory work, and will be conducted solely in an office setting.

07/03/2017(b): Contrato para realización de tesis doctoral en la Universidad de Aveiro (Portugal)
Pre-selection of candidates for PhD in the scope of the activities developed by the Oceanography and Marine geology group of CESAM at University of Aveiro, Portugal through the announcement of FCT above. Candidates should have a first or upper-second-class honours degree in ocean science, coastal engineering area. Applicants with a relevant MSc level qualification would be particularly welcome.
Candidates will need to develop a strong competency in numerical modelling, in particular behavior adaptive models (neuronal networks and/or genetic algorithms) for short term morphodynamic forecast in sandy beaches. Skills in software generation are valued.

This PhD brings together the fields of sea-level rise, hazards, coastal morphodynamic change, heritage, ecosystem evaluation, GIS and computer science. An exciting feature of the project is the many directions and opportunities it could take into what is a yet little explored research area.
Our aim is to recruit an excellent, enthusiastic student. Ideally, the student would have a multi-disciplinary background with at least a 2:1 in engineering, earth science, geography or oceanography, and preferably with a Master’s degree. Students would be expected to undertake further training as part of their PhD programme, including training from the funder, the Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarship scheme.

The PhD project takes place in the framework of the ANR AMORAD project (Improvement of radionuclides dispersion and impact assessment modelling in the environment) led by IRSN (2013-2019). The “Sediment” action in the “Marine” axe aims at improving the understanding and the numerical modelling of potentially contaminated sediment fluxes, from continental origin and/or local sediment resuspension. The PhD will focus on the numerical modelling of sediment dynamics from the Gironde estuary to the continental shelf with two main goals: (i) to investigate the influence of hydro-meteorological events (e.g. high/low river discharges, storms) on sediment fluxes; and (ii) to determine the sediment accumulation and dispersion areas on the continental shelf.

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to work within our interdisciplinary team starting 1st June 2016. The position is limited to a duration of three years and the salary is based on the German Civil Service system for employees E13 TV-L (65%).
The project is to develop artificial seagrass made of biodegradable material which provides suitable growth conditions for natural seagrass and can be used in restoration projects. The aim is that the artificial seagrass mimics the ecosystem engineering functions of natural seagrass and quantifying these will be part of the project.
The PhD candidate will conduct field and lab work to define suitable growth conditions for seagrass and assess which plant parameters are key to the ecosystem engineering of such conditions in natural seagrass meadows. The focus will be on light requirements and hydrodynamic (waves and currents) forcing. Results will inform the design of the artificial structures which will be developed by project partners.
Applicant for the position must have an above-average MSc or equivalent degree in natural sciences with knowledge or interest in vegetation ecology, fluid mechanics, measurement techniques and data analysis.

The WATU project Wave turbulence: beyond weak turbulence is a 5 year research program supervised by N. Mordant and selected by ERC with a 2 millions of euros funding to study the statistical properties of wave turbulence (begins in September 2015). Wave turbulence is a statistical state made of a large number of waves that are coupled by nonlinear effects. The typical example of wave turbulence is that of oceanic waves (surface gravity waves) that develop a very wide spectrum of wavelengths from centimeter scale up to several tens of meters.

Jornadas sobre La gestión histórica del agua en zonas de alta montaña que organiza la Universidad de Granada, en colaboración con el Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada y el Centro Andaluz de Medio Ambiente.
Las jornadas teóricas, el 10 y 11 de febrero en el Salón de Grados del Edificio Mecenas, servirán para hacer una revisión de los conocimientos y actuaciones en Sierra Nevada y el contexto internacional. La primera jornada se centrará en el papel de los sistemas de careo de Sierra Nevada, los últimos estudios llevados a cabo en ellas y medidas de protección y conservación. El segundo día contaremos con una pequeña muestra de las investigaciones que se están realizando en sistemas de regadío de montaña que existen en otras partes del mundo. Le adjunto el tríptico informativo.
Este seminario se complementará con una actividad práctica que se realizará del 14 de febrero al 16 de marzo, y consistirá en la recuperación de una acequia en desuso con la ayuda de la comunidad de regantes de Cáñar. El objetivo es restaurar una acequia abandonada siguiendo los usos tradicionales, para evaluar su eficacia y los servicios ecosistémicos prestados. Aquellos que quieran participar más de un día en dicha actividad contarán con alojamiento y manutención.

Synergy OLCI/SLSTR sensors for the atmospheric correction of ocean color images over coastal waters
At the end of 2014, the European Space Agency will launch the
Sentinel-3A satellite. Onboard, two instruments are particularly
interesting for the study of ocean color. The OLCI sensor dedicated to
ocean color with wavelengths comprised between 400 and 1020 nm and the
SLSTR sensor mainly dedicated to the sea-surface temperature with
wavelengths between 1200nm and 12 microns. The images of both sensors
will be co-recorded and their swaths overpass each other. Moreover, an
hybrid processing chain is developed for providing an L1C product. This
co-registration of products from these two sensors opens very
interesting perspectives for the study of coastal waters from a synergy
between their respective images. Indeed, as shown by Wang and Shi
(2009), using the short-wave infrared (1240-2130 nm, SWIR) for the
processing of ocean color data (step called atmospheric correction) can
be very useful in turbid waters, as the ocean can be considered
negligeable. So the aerosol models can be easily determined in those
bands. The aerosol signal is then subtracted to the signal measured by
the remote sensor in the visible for accessing the ocean signal. This
latter is very important in ocean color as it is directly linked to the
inherent optical properties of seawaters and to biogeochemical parameters.
The topic of the PhD thesis will be to develop an innovative atmospheric
correction algorithm using information from SLSTR for aerosol models
determination in the SWIR and from OLCI for determining the ocean signal
in the visible bands. The candidate will also seek taking advantage of
two new OLCI bands: 940 and 1020 nm. These bands do not exist on any
other ocean color satellites. They could be very useful for constraining
the atmospheric correction in turbid waters. Sensitivity studies will be
taken to determine the limits when using these bands for atmospheric
correction in turbid waters
This Phd thesis will take place in the framework of the OLCI sub-group
of the Sentinel-3A validation team, the hosting team being a referenced
partner at ESA. The method developed during the PhD thesis will be
validated over three regions of interest of the group: English
Channel/North Sea, French Guiana and Vietnam.
The PhD candidate must have a Master in Remote sensing or physical
oceanography or environmental sciences. Computer sciences skills will be

The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC) and the International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) are pleased to announce the second edition of their joint Summer School on “Adaptation Policies and Practices in the Mediterranean Basin (MedAdapt)” for postgraduate students.
The aim of the Summer School is to offer an in-depth view of the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean Basin and to pursue a thorough investigation of key adaptation policies and best practices, whether not yet implemented or already implemented across the region. The Summer School programe will combine physical, economic, and socio-political aspects of the Mediterranean in an interdisciplinary approach for the purpose of educating the public about the impacts of climate change. Students will also benefit from an overview of the technical instruments that enable a better understanding of the statistical models for impact and adaptation analysis. The Summer School topics will include: climate systems and impacts in the Mediterranean basin, integrated assessment of climate change impacts, and adaptation strategies in the Mediterranean region: case studies, options and best adaptation practices.
The Summer School will take place from May 19th to May 23rd, 2014 at the ICCG and CMCC (CIP Division) offices on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, in Venice, located just in front of St. Mark’s Square.
ADMISSION: The School offers a specialised study programme for doctoral and post-doctoral students from all over the world in environmental and resource economics, law, political science and engineering.
