The topic of this presentation is the tumour methylome in lung cancer and its translational relevance in precision oncology. In non-small cell lung cancer, DNA methylation undergoes significant alterations during tumorigenesis, reflecting tumour biology, clinico-pathological features, and treatment response.
Fabrizio Federico Pio’s research focuses on the identification of prognostic and predictive epigenetic biomarkers to support therapeutic decision-making. In particular, methylation changes affecting genes such as KEAP1, SPARC, and immune-related pathways including PD-L1 highlight the evidence of epigenetic mechanisms involved in tumour progression and response to immunotherapy.
Overall, this talk aims to address unmet clinical needs in non-small cell lung cancer, particularly early patient identification and risk stratification, highlighting the key role of molecular biology from a translational perspective. Special emphasis will be placed on the advent of liquid biopsy and the analysis of cell-free DNA methylation patterns as innovative tools to improve detection and treatment selection in this group of cancer patients.
