"Who is to blame for the variability in the effects of Predictions on Memory?"

"If something is unpredicted, then it is well remembered". This rather uncontroversial statement has implicitly dominated cognitive science since at least the 1970s. However, the effects of Prediction on Memory have only become the focus of extensive research in the last decade. During this time, a myriad of results has emerged, revealing a much more complex relationship between these two concepts. In this talk I will present some of our own work demonstrating differential mnemonic consequences when people make predictions under different scenarios. The discussion of these results will point to the broader issue of (the lack of) operationalized definitions of psychological constructs and call for a more computationally oriented approach to cognitive (neuro)science.
