Abstract: Studies in "neuroaesthetics" typically focus on how the reward system is modulated by objective differences between the physical features of the things being appraised or by subjective differences in preferences between individuals. However, there is less understanding about the cognitive representation of meaningfully distinct kinds of judgments for aesthetic objects. This talk will explore how cognitive science might investigate the meaningful differences between distinct kinds of higher-order judgments when evaluating qualities like beauty, usefulness, and art-objecthood.
