Resumen: Ideological conflict and aggressive verbal behaviours are common phenomena among various democratically elected parliaments. However, in multilingual legislative bodies such as the European Parliament speakers have to rely on interpreters to transfer sensitive content such as impoliteness, racism or sexism. For several years, I have explored Polish, English and German material from plenary sessions of the European Parliament and found much evidence for the filtering effect interpreting may have. The interpreter’s facework often mitigates the message, and I will show some examples from my research of typical strategies used to this effect. I will also share my reflections on possible reasons for such mitigating shifts.
